What motivates us? Money, Power or Prestige?

Chapter 10 in our reading introduces
us to the topic of motivation. Motivation
is described as a power which acts upon you, causing you to behave a certain
way or perform a certain action.  (percypsych101.wordpress.com). The psychological needs that pushes us to the extreme, often
making us wants to prove to others we are better than they are. As students we
push ourselves, determined to achieve decent grades. As employees we push to
perform better at work, in an attempt to prove to our bosses that we are better
than our co-workers or that we deserve that extra compensation.  At the gym we may work very hard to achieve
that perfect body. For the wealthy they endeavor to finds ways to become wealthier.
But the things that motivate us does it make us happy?

Motivational theories explain the
“itch” or “drive” or “reason” behind our
behaviors – voluntary and involuntary (percypsych101.wordpress.com). Motivation is  driven
by emotions.  Many people may be excited
by external rewards which may spur people for short periods of time sometimes
causing  the focus to be on  quantity (how much can be done) over quality (how
good it is being done). But, as experts pointed out, genuine motivation will  always be a factor, and hopefully will inspires
more quality in performance. (www.psychology.com).

I do believe that it is acceptable to be motivated and psychologists
believe that to be motivated emotions play a role in energizing us. If we are
energized, we will be motivated. 
Motivation encourages us to achieve things we strive to accomplish,
however I sincerely believe that our heart and soul should   be in everything we attempt to accomplish in
order to achieve successful outcomes.

Stress and how it can endanger our

Our text states that stress—especially
if it is chronic—takes a toll on our bodies and can have enormously negative
health implications. (Pelz 2017). Stress is a part of life. Sometimes it is
essential for our being. When stress arise our coping mechanisms steps in and protects
us from harm. Good coping mechanisms
against stressful environmental factors and possibly negative outcomes can lead
to effective learning, especially in adults.

When you are faced with a stressful
situation whether in your job or in your personal life it is very easy to
agonize over the issue. You may become fearful or scared. You may become so
anxious over the situation and that you may torpedoed into full panic mode.
Some stress is good for us but too much can result in making one unable to
think straight and may instigate inaction or poor performance.


We will never live
our lives stress free and will have to find ways to deal with stressful
situations.  To help abate the negative
impact of stress, it is important that we avoid alcohol and minimize our
caffeine intake. Both are stimulants that can increase our anxiety.  Instead drink lots of water. Indulge in more
physical activity. Often when we are stressed exercise is the furthest thing
from our minds. Exercise help restore our body and mind to a calmer place. Another
thing that can reduce stress is to sleep more. 
Lack of sleep is a great cause of stress. Stress disturbs our sleep as
thoughts keep spinning in our heads, and preventing us from sleeping. And
finally, please seek professional help or talk to someone; friends, peers,
parents, significant others or clergy. I cannot reiterate how important it is
not to resort to alcohol or drugs when stressful situations arise.

Personality Traits and how it
defines our characters.

Personality traits manifest a person’s distinctive representation of
their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Our personality traits tell others if
we are consistent, reliable or stable or if we are unpredictable, untrustworthy
or irrational. Individuals who scores high on a specific trait list are expected
to display sociably accepted behaviors in different situations at any given time.
Those that scores low often exhibits traits that portrays negative emotions
such as anger, aggression, contempt, disgust, guilt, fear, and nervousness. Trait
psychologists believe that people differ from one another in terms of where
they stand on a set of basic trait dimensions that persist over time and across

character entails knowing our values and living our lives based on our
ideologies, self-reflection, and courage.  Knowing what good personality
traits are is excellent. However, I also believe that what is truly in a
person’s heart will show externally to the world.  Being a decent human being means being loyal
to our friends and family.  Having good
personality traits means being respectful to others. One cannot gain respect if
they do not give respect.  We should
always strive to be responsible in our obligations. Having good character
skills requires us to be humble as humility goes a long way. Finally, we should
be compassionate, emphatic, fair and most importantly learn to forgive.


The Pursuit of Happiness

Who does not
want to pursuit happiness? Or to live “happily ever after”. Are we chasing a
fantasy when we try pursuing happiness? The pursuit of happiness is
an important issue to many of us.   Magazines, books and talk shows fill our lives
with the topic. It is part of human intuition to pursue happiness as the
opposite of happiness is sadness, and just like physical pain we strive to
avoid feeling sad.   

Abraham Maslow’s well-established
hierarchy of needs, described humans needs as pertained to survival. Once a
person has accomplished his survival needs and no longer feels threatened
emotional pleasure and the pursuit of happiness becomes a primary focus. Happiness
may take on many characteristics but it is the core stimulus in most our
decision making.

 Even in our quest in the
pursuit of happiness, chaos arises and unhappiness prevails instead, as actions
we have taken leads us in the wrong direction. These wrong steps can cause us
temporary stress, or depends on the actions we have taken can create damaging

importantly is what happiness means to us personally.  What are the things that give us a deep sense
of satisfaction and as a result, bring us happiness? Sometimes it is just
little things such as talking as being with our family, taking to our friends,
partaking in physical activities, or being involved in community activities
that makes us happy.  Making an effort
every day to explore what is possible is the very thing that solidifies our
life in a meaningful and happy way. It is essential for our wellbeing.
