To free reign. But, living in a place ruled

To me this
chapter backed up a lot of things mentioned in previous chapters regarding
those who they stop, search, arrest and charge for drug offences. As it turns
out, all that is necessary is to give law enforcement officials extraordinary discretion
for those they deem criminals. This showcases that conscious and unconscious
racial bias is allowed free reign. But, living in a place ruled by law and with
a Constitution that protects human rights, shouldn’t injustices be challenged
in court? You would assume so, right? In this case the War on Drugs is the silver
lining. The Supreme Court have made it extremely difficult to bring a lawsuit against
any law officer for bigoted treatment. They demand that everyone who has a
problem involving racial bias with an officer, beforehand have undeniable evidence
that racial differences are the product of intended racial unfairness. I agree
with the statement Alexander makes that no police officer is going to say on
record that he or she arrest black people for a drug crime because he or she
hates black people. In the end, even with hard evidence, the police officers
will always say they are just doing their job to keep society safe from dangerous
criminals. In all honesty, I think some of these police officers can be some of
the most dangerous criminals on the street.

When the whole
War on Drugs epidemic started law enforcement commonly were encouraged by the
higher ups to go after crack cocaine, which was more frequently used by African
Americans, while powder was universally more used by whites. Soon the media started
to represent these crack users as the plague of humanity, and since the plague
was black, the picture in everybody’s head was that your average criminal must
be black. Having these stereotypes out in the open made it easy for the police
to stop whomever they saw as a threat, and this proved to be quite dangerous. Officers
claim they are going into the ghetto neighborhoods because all the criminals
live there, but in reality it is where mostly black people reside due to
housing discrimination.
