Know Your Representatives
The purpose of this report is to inform us about who our U.S. Congressional legislators are and California legislators are. We will learn by looking for their background, election dates, and some of the issues they have supported or opposed.
Senator Feinstein became the first female mayor of San Francisco. Senator Feinstein earned the position of the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017. She was the first women to achieve that position. Her focus is to “help shape the criminal law, national security, immigration, civil rights and the courts” (Feinstein Website). She was also the first woman to lead the Senate select committee of intelligence in 2009. She has also accomplished other positions in the office during the many years. (Feinstein Website)
Dianne Feinstein presented herself as a member of the Democratic party for her elections. Dianne Feinstein was first elected to Senate in 1992, and she held that position for two years. Feinstein was re-elected in1994, 2000, and 2012. And in 2012, in the United States Senate elections, she holds the record of most popular votes. Senator Feinstein has decided to run for the 2018 re-election.
Dianne Feinstein introduces a gun control bill to be passed because she is a supporter of strict gun control laws. In the Article, “Dianne Feinstein Introduce Senate Gun Control Bill to Ban Bump Stocks,” Feinstein was frustrated of the numerous amount of shooting that was happening and the Senate lagging the process of passing the law. She said, “And now after Las Vegas, I hope senators will finally summon the political courage to stand up and say, ‘Enough is enough.'” She supports the ban on gun control because of all the historic tragedy that has happened.
I think that gun control is an important issue and she made a great effort to pass laws to decrease gun violence. It is a relevant issue in my life because I want to feel safe when I go out in public. She was talking about the tragedy at Las Vegas, and it made me think I would feel safer going to a concert with a gun control law. I think the outcome of passing the gun control law will be a positive change in the U.S.
Representative Jimmy Panetta is the represented for California’s 20th congressional district. The house of Democrats chose Jimmy Panetta to in represents and oversees the Central Coast, Monterey and San Benito regions and southern parts of Santa Clara and Santa Cruz regions.
Jimmy Panetta served in the United States Navy Reserve. Because of Repressive Panetta’s background of serving the country, the 20th district in California is also a home to lots of military bases. He serves on the board for “Veterans Transition Center” where he concentrates on ending veteran homelessness. Because of his support to the veterans and their loved ones, in 2015, he was awarded veteran of the year in the Monterey Country. (Panetta website)
Jimmy Panetta assumed office on Januarry3, 2017 as a member of the United States House of Representative for California’s 20th district. He has been holding the seat for a year and few days. He is a member of the Democratic party. Each representative is elected for a two-year term, so the next election is in 2018.
As I mentioned before, Panetta has served in U.S. Navy, and because of this he has supported and passed laws for them. In Congressman’s website, He talks about the acts he has bypassed in the United States Congress. For example, he has passed laws like, “Gold Star Family Support Act”, “The Global War on Termism War Memorial Act”, “Ensuring Veteran Enterprise Participation in Strategic Sourcing Act”, “Forever GI bill”, “The WINGMAN Act”, “The Reserve Component Benefit’s Parity Act”, and “The VA Employee Fairness Act of 2017.” All these acts have a specific thing that focuses on veterans and their families.
I think that his effort toward the veterans was important because it was a personal matter and it was for the people who go to war for their country. This is relevant in my life because I would never be able to do what a solider does and for that reason, I believe they should be rewarded. Think this a positive outcome for our congressman and the veterans.
