There are many important people in my life, and in my family. Everyone in my family has a special place in my heart, but some more than others. One of the most important people in my life is my grandpa, Richard Lee Grady. I cannot imagine my life without him. Without him, and the rest of my family, a considerable part of my life and values would be missing. His stories, lessons, attitude, and strength that impact me daily. My grandpa was born on April 1, 1952, a day I’ve always thought matches his personality perfectly. My grandpa is so fun-loving, exuberant, and unfortunately sometimes foolish. Because of his personality, he is able to tell amazing stories about his childhood including living in multiple states across the US, and even Taipei. One of his many stories is about living in Taipei, though I have heard many variations, they all consist of one main idea. His family had a pet monkey, but one day upon returning home, the monkey was missing. When questioning their housekeeper, they found out she had taken the monkey home, killed it, and eaten it. I look up to my grandfather for many reasons, but one of the most impactful is the love he has for my grandmother. They are two utterly different people, but fit together so well. As my grandpa has a carefree personality, my grandma is his rock. She is so calm, sensible, and loving that she balances out his craziness. As my parents are divorced, which is not the ideal example of love usually given, I look towards my grandparents for what a proper relationship should look like. My grandparents have the love I strive to find one day. If you ask my grandma about the day they met, she will say it was love at first sight, but if you ask my grandpa he will jokingly tell you “it took me a bit to realize she was the one.” Along with his love for my grandmother, he has such a big heart for other people. As a senior in high school, he worked full time at Tennessee School for the Deaf. His compassion for others has shown me the correct way to treat people, and how to earn respect and trust. Now, as a retired salesman, you can find him anywhere, chatting with anyone, about anything with a big ole grin on his face. I have always seen my grandpa as strong and resilient but now more than ever. Throughout the course his life, he has always proven his character of strength and courage in every situation, from being in a truck explosion when he was a young man to fighting cancer twice just a few years ago. His optimism and choosing to make the best out of every situation inspires me. As much as my grandpa has taught me, I know he has taught others. He means more to me than he will ever know, and will only continue to mean more. I hope that I can pass down the lessons he has taught me to my children, and for my grandchildren to see me the way I see him. Also, I hope to find someone to love and be able to put up with me the way my grandma does with my grandpa. His lessons, actions, and attitude continue to shape my character more everyday. I am lucky to have him as my grandfather.
