The word arse in English derives from the Germanic root -arsaz, which originated from the Proto-Indo-European root -ors, meaning “buttocks” or “backside”. The combined form arsehole is first seen in its literal use to refer to the anus. The metaphorical use is to name the worst place or area somewhere or the use to refer to a person in a bad manor. With other controversial words, the use of the word may have been most common in common everyday speech before being seen in books and on television. The word Asshole today has two different common definitions, the anus and an irritating person, but both are nouns. Asshole’s main usage is vulgar slang that is used in everyday speech, on tv shows and in movies, even in politics as well. Until the early 1990s, the word was considered one of the many words that was never to be said on network television in the United States. Comedian Andrew Clay shocked his audience and television viewers when he said “Asshole” during the televised 1989 MTV awards. Movies that featured use of the word asshole include The Terminator, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and Back to the Future. As time moves along and people are exposed more to this language, vulgarity had become more acceptable, and the word asshole was featured in dialog on the series NYPD Blue, but still is far from being acceptable on network TV. In some broadcast edits such as South Park and Family Guy, the word is partially bleeped out, as “assh…”. The word is seen still as offensive, it has not lost its original meaning but has become more common and familiar in the English language. As mentioned before, asshole is mainly used as a vulgar term to describe anyone viewed as stupid, unpleasant, arrogant or mean. When researching the etymology of this word I discovered Aaron James had written a book about the connotation and denotation of the word. In the book Assholes: A Theory, asshole is defined as “a person who considers himself of much greater moral or social importance than everyone else; who allows himself to enjoy special advantages; who does this out of an entrenched sense of entitlement; and who is immunized by his sense of entitlement against the complaints of other people”. This word is considered as a colloquial term in many countries and cultures besides English and the United States because it describes an organ for defecation, which is not only seen as taboo to talk about in the United States. In February 2004, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called President Bush “an asshole” for thinking he helped create and supporyt negative ads against himin 2002. The word in original Spanish was “pendejo”, and in news coverage translated the word originally as “asshole”. The actual meaning of the word varies between Latin American countries and in Venezuela, it means “fool”. These words are similar in definition. The word Asshole today has two different definitions, the anus and an irritating person, but both are nouns. Asshole’s main usage is vulgar slang that is used in everyday speech, on tv shows and in movies, even in politics and has not changed in meaning. This word is becoming more acceptable in speech everyday, especially in the age of social media and the internet.
