The fundamental difference between the influence of positive and negative thoughts on the brain predetermines the future life of a person. How? The answer is given by many years of research by psychologists. Can positive thoughts reflect on us with something more than just a smile on their face? Yes. This is convinced Barbara Fredrickson (Barbara Fredrickson) – holder of a Ph.D. in Stanford University. Frederickson is one of the world’s leading scientists studying social psychology. Her works have received wide circulation and were awarded honorary awards. For 20 years of scientific activity, Barbara conducted a number of studies aimed at studying the influence of emotions on a person’s life in the future. What conclusions did she come to? Let’s find out.How negative thoughts affect the brainLet’s imagine that you walk through the forest and unexpectedly meet on your way a wolf. In this situation, your brain registers a negative emotion – fear.Scientists have long known that negative emotions program the convolutions to perform certain actions. For example, when crossing with a wolf, you start running away from it. The rest of the world ceases to exist. You focus exclusively on the beast, fear and desire to get away as soon as possible.Of course, millions of years ago, the instinct of self-preservation inherent in our ancestors helped them survive and continue the race. But in our modern society there is no need to worry about an unexpected meeting with a dangerous representative of wildlife. The problem is that your brain is still programmed to react to negative emotions the same way – by disconnecting from the outside world and rejecting alternative options for action. Why is composure and ability to restrain one’s emotions – these are almost the most important qualities of a good boxer? Because anger and emotion in a fight narrows the mind and does not give tactical thinking. Look at the list of upcoming affairs for the day, find it not very real and can not get started? Yes, you were paralyzed by the horror of contemplating a long list of tasks. Feel lousy because you do not care about your health? Now all your thoughts are reduced to what you are weaklings, lazy people and loafers. In each similar situation, the brain closes from the outside world and concentrates on negative emotions: fear, anger or stress. Negative emotions do not allow your head to look around looking for alternatives and opportunities that surround you. It’s just an instinct of survival. How positive thoughts affect the brainFredrickson studied the effect of positive thoughts on the brain during a small experiment. She divided the test subjects into groups of five and showed each company different videos. The first two groups were shown clips that cause positive emotions. Group 1 was filled with a sense of joy. The second five watched the frames, creating a sense of pleasure. The third company looked at images that, according to their emotional saturation, were neutral or did not contain significant emotions. The last two groups “enjoyed” the video series that generates negative emotions. The fourth five absorbed a sense of fear, and the final five felt a sense of anger. After that, each participant was asked to present himself in a situation where such feelings might arise, and record what they would have undertaken. Each subject was given a sheet of paper with 20 empty lines, which began with the phrase “I would like …”.Participants who watched the clips of fear and anger wrote the smallest number of answers. And the subjects, who admired the images of joy and pleasure, filled a much larger number of lines, even in comparison with the neutral group. Thus, when you experience positive emotions, such as joy, pleasure, love, you pay attention to more opportunities in your life. These conclusions were among the first truly proving that positive impressions increase the sense of one’s own strengths and open up new possibilities for thinking. But this is only the beginning. The most interesting influence of positive thinking comes later …How positive thinking develops skills and abilitiesThe benefits of positive emotions are not limited to several minutes of pleasant sensations. Positive impressions help to acquire skills and develop resources for use in later life.Let’s consider a real example.
