The Progressive Movement was defined as a time in American history in where there were people who tried to bring reforms to America, in both “social and political” life. The sort of people that were involved in the movement were people who wanted to give a voice and empower workers and women who were in support of protecting other women and children from unsafe working conditions.Muckraker was the term given by Theodore Roosevelt that described people who tried to expose the disturbing conditions of the ghettos of America using their journalism skills. Examples of muckrakers included Lewis Hine who took photographs of children who worked. Another example would be Lincoln Steffens showed how leaders gained lots from “political corruption.” Another example would be Ida Tarbell who exposed the corruptions of the Standard Oil Company. Another example would be Theodore Dreiser who wrote about how young woman are corrupted because of bad city environments.Margaret Sanger was an Irish American who was part of the idea of New Feminism and pushed and fought for birth control. How she did that was writing articles on sex education. She also opened a clinic for the poor in which she gave them birth control. Sanger associated a woman’s freedom with whether she can control if she wants to have a baby or not.Some f the reforms in La Follete’s Wisconsin Idea included making nominations for candidates using the primaries. Another idea was having states regulate the railroads etc.Maternalist reform had ideas that included improving the living conditions of poor women and their children using government help. Which led to the idea that women should be financially independent which led to the idea that women should work.Theodore Roosevelt became known as the progressive president for breaking up trusts and monopolies and took the sides of strikers. Also he became known as the progressive president for getting rid of child labor.
