The Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) was established on September 28, 2001 as an immediate response from the Security Council to the several terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 in the United States. The committee was adopted unanimously by members of the United Nations, and aims to prevent terrorist attacks from taking place (United Nations, 2016). The CTC was originally directed by ——; however Amr Abdellatif Aboulatta took up his functions on 2013. The CTC parent committee is the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and focuses on monitoring the process and decisions of the committee. Currently, the CTC is working on preventing terrorist associations on getting any financial help, which would result on terrorist groups by having much less capacity of expanding their attacks worldwide. II. Topic information A) History of Topic (5-6P)Extremist groups are those groups who hold extreme religious and political views; those groups support severe violent and in some regions illegal acts against whoever disagree with their ideals. There are several extremist groups around the globe who are imposing their beliefs on radical ways towards civilians, and are a huge risk for world wide security. Extremist groups use their power against civilians to support what they believe in. Some cases may include political, religious and socioeconomic discrepancies.Extremist groups started emerging in the public eye around the time of the 2001 Al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on the United States, but records state attacks started since 1964 (Moore, PBS, 2014). With the continuous expansion of extremist groups such as ISIS and Boko, authorities have put effort into reducing the recruitment power extremists have. ISIS is now implementing the Sharia, which consists of moral principles from the teaching of Mohammed (Islamic prophet), also known for killing dozens of people at a time and carrying out public executions, crucifixions and other acts (Emery, Snopes, 2017). Boko Haram militants mostly inhabit areas in the northern states of Nigeria. In the local Hausa language, Boko Haram means western education is forbidden, which explains a major reason of why men are not educated into peace. Some of the causes of terrorism in a political point of view, consist of people choosing extremist groups when they want to correct a social, political or historical wrong. During the 1990s, many attacks consisted on various religious encounters. Many forms of disadvantages can lead people to terrorism in particular, poverty, lack of education or lack of political freedom. The belief that violence or it is threat will be effective, is the main cause terrorism exists. Illiteracy is also a prime factor of extremist groups. Uneducated people are easy to persuade to commit the crime because they have no high ability of thinking. More than 80% of deaths from terrorism in 2013 occured in just five countries Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria. On September 11th, 2001, hijacked airliners crashed into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon outside Washington. A fourth plane was planned to crash into the White House instead crashing into a Pennsylvania field. According to the 9/11 commission’s report, deaths totaled more than 2,600 at the World Trade Center, 125 at the Pentagon and 256 in the four planes. Another main event happened on October 7th, 2001, Afghanistan war begins. Shortly after the first US missiles hit Kabul, television news channel air a footage of Bin Laden that was clearly pre-recorded.Terrorist attacks and attempted attacks in the United States have become less frequent since 1970s through to September 11th was a huge exception. Law enforcement officials appear to be getting better at defending terrorist attacks even tho they can not stop all of them. Just about every part of the United States has been hit by some form of terrorist attack since 1970 keeping in mind this includes all attacks lethal and non-lethal. Since the Oklahoma City bombing, a greater portions of terrorist attacks have been carried out by individuals. Around 5% attacks by individual happened before 1995 and around 30% of attacks by individuals happened after 1995. Bombings have long been the tactic of choice for terrorists in the United States. North America suffers far fewer terrorist attacks than other regions around the world. It was the second deadliest year on the record. A total of 29,376 deaths related to terrorism were recorded for 2015. 2014 continues to be the most deadly year on record.
