My name is Siddharth Nandan and I am writing an application for a scholarship to assist me throughout my time studying in the Development Studies Masters program at The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
I come from a weak socio-economic background. My mother is an instructor in a government school and my father is a farmer. We are a joint family of five members and my grandparents are quite old. They require proper care and half of my mother’s earnings are spent on the medicines and household consumption. We have small farmland, which does not yield enough and due to droughts from last few years farming has proved costly for us. My father is unemployed and looks after my grandparents. The house that my parents and grandparents live in is a rented property. My father never had the opportunity to attend college and due to this, he faced many struggles in his life. He made a commitment to instil in me love of learning and made me understand the value of hard work and dedication.
I completed my high school at Sri Sathya Sai School in Uttrakhand where the education was free of cost. It helped my family save a great deal of money. In my senior years in the school, I scored 95% and was granted school’s academic award. In 2015, I moved to New Delhi for my undergraduate study. It wasn’t easy to survive in such a big city for a person like me whose financial background was not so strong. Having very little support from my family I started tutoring US students online via an online tutoring company. The job required me to work from home for at least 4 hours a day. I taught students at night and attended college in the morning. The tutoring helped me pay my college tuition fees and at the same time, my speaking skills were strengthened. I could fluently converse with anyone in English.
I have been a consistent student and have excelled in academic. While supporting my education financially, I have also interned with International Organizations. In my 2nd year of college, I received an offer to work as an Intern with UNHCR for 3 months. In addition to focusing on my own studies I was working as an intern in the day and as a Math and English tutor at night.
Relocating from New Delhi, for the duration of the program represents a huge challenge and while it is one I am fully committed to, it does present considerable financial strain. This scholarship will serve as an opportunity to fully focus my attention on the main objective of achieving the best I can in the Development Studies program.
If awarded the chance to study further in my field at The Graduate Institute, it will be an incredible opportunity for me and, one I intend to seize wholeheartedly without reservation. Throughout my previous studies and working experience, I have regularly demonstrated that when presented with an opportunity I will strive as hard as I can to best represent myself. Despite financial hardship, I have always done what is necessary to further my studies and work experience. I will strive to be a representative and ambassador of The Graduate Institute throughout my future career. I thank you for taking the time to evaluate this application.
