CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Environment is defined as a
surrounding or growth of an individual. Global environment 
have undergone several changes which are mainly due to the result of
human activities. The rapid globalization, urbanization,
poverty, unsustainable consumption patterns and population growth (Unep, 2012).  The quality of
environment have been significantly changed to an alarming rate due to the
drastic reduction in quality of air, water and soil have  increased 
pollution in ocean , wildlife extinction, loss of biodiversity, and
increased in frequency and intensity of catastrophic natural disasters
resulting in loss of lives and properties, spread and increased in cancerous
diseases (Abbas, 2013). So, it’s not a
topic to discuses above mentioned environmental problems are natural or
anthropogenic. It has been said that man as the senior citizen of the earth is
completely responsible for destruction and over exploitation of the environment
and natural resources due to his selfishness. Hence, the need for environmental
education and awareness becomes very important and an essential measure to reduce
the situation leading to a greater extent.

The
level of global environmental challenges now lead to serious scientific
dispute. So it is  very important to
inform and educate citizens to make appropriate environmental decisions and
adopt behavioural approach in addressing environmental challenges, the term of
environmental education (EE) was born (Kasser, 2009). (Al, 2012) The method of creating   knowledge, comprehension, values, attitudes,
skills, abilities and awareness among individuals and social groups about the
protection of environment was called as environmental education. The Geographical Association`s Environmental
Education Working Group (1980) explains that Environmental Education (EE) as a
multitude of processes and activities that creates understanding of environment
and leads to the evolution caring and committed responses.  The awareness about importance of  environment and the need of protection and
preservation of it should be created among the people in which they live ,as
well as the consequences of our actions in the course of developmental
activities. Therefore the main  aim of
environmental education is to redirect and shape human behavior towards
responsible acts and commitments to environment. So that effective
environmental education gears and promotes responsible citizenship behavior
toward the environment and environmental protection. Thus, environmental education,
awareness and induced public participation in environmental protection become
important in development of environmental sustainability. The main objective of Environmental education is it
should give individuals and social groups with an opportunity to get involved
in all levels of works towards the reduction of environmental issues (UNESCO-UNEP, 1985).  The key factors of environmental behaviour
are Environmental awareness, Environmental attitude and Environmental
participation.

Environmental Awareness is
concern and knowledge about current status of 
environment or environmental problem. Our Future generations may find
earth worth not living if the environmental issues are not solved or taken care
of (Roberta, 2009). To solve an improve
the current  situation ,creating  awareness , knowledge and attitude to
different environmental problems and issues. Creating awareness Using the
findings of science and technology  will
play important  role in better
understanding and knowledge about  the
environmental issues. It is the duty of every human being to have the awareness
toward the environment to improve the sustainability and protection of it (Yaghoobi,
2003).

Attitude is  also one of the important part of
environmental education. Environmental attitude a learned predisposition to
respond consistently favorable or unfavorable manner with respect to the
environment (Uitto,
2004).
Environmental attitude is the three dimensional concept. They are environmental
worldview, concern about environment and commitment towards environment.
Environmental attitude is examined  with
theoretical and empirical approaches . In environmentalism  environmental attitude is one of the
important concept. According to (Dunlap,
1978)said
that  overall environmental balance is
effected by the relationship between  the
environment and society and perception regarding the consumption of  natural resources. The researchers also
examined that individual factor like environmental value will affect  the environmental attitude.

Environmental education provides the opportunities
and ability for learners engage themselves actively in  facing environmental challenges. This will
involve taking individual as well as corporate responsibility Participation is
the activity that enables and encourages people to better play their function
in environmental developmental. Individual benefits the right of participating,
that helps the individual to gain the advantage of decision making related to
his way of life. The fact is to find out what are the factors that influencing
individuals participation in environmental activities. According to (Goulding, 1990) information,
education, organization, as well as mutual understanding between individuals
and environmental organizations are the leading factors in public participation
in environmental development. If there is a creative and flexible approaches
and methods that will leads to Effective participation process.  So we should develop a creative and original
approach in the use of participation techniques.

Environmental attitude and awareness
consists of some predicators like education, 
age, gender, residents, income and political tendency. According to
Ostman and Parker education is the correct use of predicators. Also said that
there is the significant relationship between environmental education and
environmental awareness, environmental education and environmental attitude. (Arcury,
1990).Younger
generation has more concern then that of older generation because
environmentalism is correct outlet for younger generation. Students are the
most important  human beings for saving
and protection of  environment .For
portraying national civilization 
awareness among the students is the most important factor. It displays
the various aspects of environmental conditions like individual consideration, attitude
and behavior  the local citizens and
public capacity towards the sustainable development of the society (Kaiser,
2003).
According to Athman and Monroe (2000) In Environmental Education  the most important factor is environmental
awareness. The study done bye Palmer (1998) said that  students should have  appropriate amount of  understanding and knowledge  about the current  status of environment for the protection and
restoration of  environment. Some
researchers  identified that age and
education level is the important variable for environmental awareness and
attitude. Industry’s are reason for incurred serious
environmental damages .So for the development of environmental sustainability
and to increase the power of human beings to address the environmental issues
environmental education and environmental awareness is must. So in all disciplines
of Education sector, education should contain the physical/biological and
social-economic environment and human development.(United Nations Division for
Sustainable Development, 2004).

 Increasing
importance towards the environmental awareness among all the industry, environmental
education has become must for 
hospitality students career 
betterment. Among the fastest growing sectors of the global economy , hospitality
industry is one of them. The responsibility of hospitality organizations is to
maintain the sustainable healthy environment and retain  authentic local culture for its guests and
community (Bohdanowicz, 2005; Kasim, 2008; Kirk, 1995).According to
International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IH&RA),to obtain the knowledge
about  current environmental issues and
develop daily  environment management,
education of  future hoteliers should
contain environmental component in it. (Aidl, 2000). Due to the increase
in industry’s attention towards environmental awareness and practices, It has
become very important to provide environmental education to students. That
helps them in preparing themselves to understand and take sustainable measures
and practice it for the protection of environment. This will   provide opportunities for the students to
learn the importance of how green practices have the social and economical
impact on industry. It also helps them to understand environmental efforts of
industries, and to develop the skills required to reduce  environmental problems and develop the
sustainable environment

Little research has been conducted to understand and
evaluate environmental
awareness, attitude and participation among
hospitality students and technical students.Therefore, this paper is the
study on environmental awareness, attitude and participation amongst among
hospitality students and technical students of Manipal. The university is diverse with a large number of students not only from
different states of India but also across the world, which provide the good
place to study and investigate the students environmental awareness and
participation.
