Jade CorsonMr. LehanHonors English IINovember 28, 2017 Scout and Jem’s wise father, Atticus Finch, taught his kids a lesson in courage when he said “‘I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what'” in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird (149). This quote is meant to make his kids realize that a brave person does not need to be a symbol of heroism, or someone who is an ideal role model. Anyone can possess the courage of a hero without fighting crime or being a savior, because true courage in its most basic form is going after something while understanding the risks and consequences, and powering through in spite of it, which is shown in both the novel and in a real life situation. The cranky old woman who lived near Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, was an example of someone who possessed true courage in the book, as she chose to die a sober death despite knowing she would pass uncomfortably and painfully. Mrs. Dubose was always alone in her house with her crankiness and sickness, save for the times that she was outside on her porch harassing Scout and Jem for various reasons. The bitter loneliness while she was ill, played a huge role in her addiction to Morphine. When she realized she did not have much longer to live, she mustered up a large amount of courage in recognizing her addiction and then vowing to “break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did” (Lee 148). Of course she knew that she could use the Morphine to die without knowing or feeling a thing, and that without the Morphine she would be in pain for most of her last moments, but her courage still pushed her to completely end her addiction. Atticus was the one who explained to Jem and Scout how courageous Mrs. Dubose was. While explaining, he tells the kids that Mrs. Dubose did what she did in order to die “beholden to nothing and nobody”, even though most people would do whatever they could to make their passing easier (Lee, 149). Atticus had been with her when she died, and relayed the news to the children; Mrs. Dubose had died free. Although she was stuck in her ways, and even mean at times, Mrs. Dubose was still a brave woman who died on her own terms, despite knowing she was licked before beginning her withdrawal. Another example of true courage is from the documentary Simply Complicated, which is the story of Demi Lovato and her struggle with many things in her life. The documentary is centric of her longtime battle with multiple addictions and disorders, which she had always tried to keep under wraps due to her own fears and the advise of her management team. It begins with Demi confessing that she had anxiety about the interview for the film, saying “the last time I did an interview this long I was on cocaine”. Even though the interview had kept her up at night many, many times, she had made up her mind that she was going to speak out no matter what. This situation directly relates to the quote about courage because even though she knew that she would have a hard time telling her story, making her licked before she began, she promised to herself that nothing was going to stop her- and nothing did. According to Demi and the people that work alongside her, the past year had been her year of growth, which was partly due to her breakup with her boyfriend of six years, Wilmer Valderrama. Demi and Wilmer agreed that they would benefit most from just being friends, because Demi had so many issues she hadn’t conquered yet that she couldn’t conquer if she “was relying on somebody else to take care of the loneliness”. Even though the sparks between her and Wilmer never faded, she knew she needed to experience being on her own because she never had a time in her life where she was independent. Demi had chosen to give up the love of her life despite knowing that she had no idea how to be alone, which demonstrates true courage as she knew she would struggle everyday after the breakup, but had made up her mind on growing up without someone to rely on. After watching Simply Complicated, there is no mistaking that even though Demi Lovato is not a perfect fairytale hero, she has possessed true courage throughout her recovery and conquering of her addictions and disorders.
