The conventional wind turbines have some disadvantages, one
of them is the presences of blades in large-scale wind farms that can cause
high levels of bird and bat death-rate, the devices’ fast-moving blades kill up
to 300,000 birds annually in the U.S.

So innovation solutions are appeared in wind market which is
the bladeless wind turbines to make wind power more attractive chose because of
its advantages which are noise-free, more aesthetic and will generate
electricity for 40% lesser in cost compared with conventional wind turbine moreover
overcoming the disadvantage mentioned above.


There are
different designs in bladeless wind turbines:

1-    The
vortex wind turbine


One of the co-designers
described as looking like “asparagus” because it is thin, cone-shaped turbines, the turbine uses the
force created by natural wind vortices to generate electricity.

Basically, if you put an
object in the path of wind, it will create an undulating vortex behind the

structures (like the Burj Khalifa).


So a Spanish company
named Vortex Bladeless recently unveiled their design for a wind turbine to
take advantage of this effect that generates electricity without the need of
rotating blades.


It is morphologically
simple, which means simple in structure and
it is composed of a single structural component, so its manufacturing, transport,
storage and installation have clear advantages.

It also has no bearings,
gears, etc.

       So the maintenance
requirements could be drastically reduced and their lifespan is

       expected to be higher than
traditional wind turbines.



       It is made of carbon fiber and fiberglass with the motor at the

       the amount of raw materials
used for manufacturing is reduced, which cuts the

       production costs and time to
produce the equipment. Further, having no moving

       parts in contact means that
there are really very few things that can break, which

       extends time between
maintenance intervals and allows to have less down time. As

       a result, maintaining costs
are low.


       This design Ensures that the
wind’s vortex spins synchronously along the entire

       cone, which causes it to
oscillate back and forth and generate mechanical energy

       from the  motor. The designers also mounted a ring of magnets
at the base to give

       the rotation a boost, regardless
of wind speed.



1-      In 2002, Spanish
inventor David
Yanez  saw a short film about the Tacoma
Narrows Bridge in the U.S. Strong winds caused the bridge to collapse in 1940
and questioned the way the wind energy is generated. He found another promising
way to generate energy from wind. The idea was born.

2-      Months later,
David shared his idea with his business partner Raquel martin, and he became
the first person to believe in the idea. The dream was born.

3-      The dream
completed when David Surreal joined the team. There was, probably, a 3% chance of
success, but we believed in it and went to work! The project was born.

In the coming months,
they plan to deploy both the Atlantis and Mini models for private homes in
developing countries, or small constructions like radio antennas. By 2018, they
hope to finish development of the Vortex Grand, a 150 meter tall version of the
Bladeless (which is comparable in size to conventional turbines) that will be
capable of generating 1 MW of power.


2-    Saphonian


This might look like a broken satellite dish “if you see it while
operating ”  but it’s actually a
bladeless wind turbine called the saphonian. It was developed by a startup
called siphon energy. It is largely inspired from the sailboat, the design is
similar to a fish’s tail or bird’s wing. The turbine moves in a figure 8 as it
catches the wind, converting that motion into energy.


It designed by Tunisian engineer Anis Aouni. He studied ancient sailboats and the movements of
birds and fish to develop a parabolic dish that rotates in an 8 pattern while
catching the wind like a ship’s sail.

“It’s like a big ‘eight’ in space,” Aouni said. “It’s a movement that we can
find in nature. … We find the same movement in fish tails when they are
moving, or in birds’ wings.”


According to the company, their zero-blade technology devices are capable
of overcoming the Betz’
limit, which states that no turbine can capture more than 59.3 percent
of the kinetic energy of the wind. An average wind turbine captures only 30 to
40%, while the Saphon turbine is said to be 2.3 times more efficient.

“In practice, we reached 1.7 times the performance of a traditional wind
turbine,” he said. “Economically, it is a machine that costs much
less than an equivalent wind turbine.”

Aouni hopes it eventually will be able to turn 80 % of wind
energy into electricity.


“We’ve developed several prototypes. We are at our second generation
prototype. We did the testing and this second one is twice as efficient as a
three blade turbine and in terms of manufacturing is at least 50 percent
cheaper.” – Hassine


The cost is expected to be 45% less than a conventional turbine, mostly
due to the fact that there are no blades, no hub, and no gearbox on the units.


The Saphon Zero Blade technology is different in other ways as well, most
significantly being storage of energy. Most of the kinetic energy can be stored
(via a hydraulic accumulator) or converted to electricity with a hydraulic
motor and generator.

EWICON turbine







A new contraptive idea by Dutch architecture firm ‘Mecanoo’ & is
installed at the Delft University of Technology, U.S.A.

  A bladeless wind turbine with no moving parts
that produces electricity using charged water droplets!

 The EWICON: Electrostatic Wind
Energy Converter, has the potential to change the use of wind technology.


The device comprises a steel frame holding 40 horizontal rows of
insulated ceramic tubes, which seems like a large tennis racket.The metal plate
consits of battery, inverter,HVDC source ,pump & charging system & it
is supported by insulators. The insulated plate acts as capacitor, which is
charged by removal of the charged droplets.



It creates electrical energy directly from wind energy.

 Instead of translating the
mechanical energy of large blades rotated by the wind, the bladeless turbine
lets wind move positively charged water droplets from a nozzle against the
direction of an electric field by a process called “Electrospraying”.

This leaves behind the negatively charged particles and increasing the
potential energy of the particle. A collecting system then harvests that excess

Like Awesome-Looking Giant Blades of Grass

The Windstalk concept was created by a New York design firm called
Atelier DNA. Our colleagues at Discovery News explain: “The designers came
up with the idea for the planned city Masdar, a 2.3-square-mile,
automobile-free area being built outside of Abu Dhabi. Atelier DNA’s
“Windstalk” project came in second in the Land Art Generator competition a
contest sponsored by Madsar to identify the best work of art that generates
renewable energy from a pool of international submissions.”



Madsar project includes 1203 stalks that are 180 feet high (55 meters)
and are anchored on the ground with concrete bases that range between 10 to 20
meters in diameter. They are made from carbon fiber reinforced resin poles,
about a foot (30 cm) in diameter at the base and 2 inches (5 cm) at the top.
There are LED lights at the top of the stalks, and their intensity varies with
the force of the wind. If there’s no wind, there’s no light.




The creators explain: “Within each hollow pole is a stack of
piezoelectric ceramic discs. Between the ceramic disks are electrodes. Every
other electrode is connected to each other by a cable that reaches from top to
bottom of each pole. One cable connects the even electrodes, and another cable connects
the odd ones. When the wind sways the poles, the stack of piezoelectric disks
is forced into compression, thus generating a current through the electrodes.
Within each concrete base is a hollow chamber that houses a torque generator.
The generator converts the kinetic energy of the swaying poles into electrical
energy by way of an array of current generating shock absorbers, which convert
energy produced by the forced movement of fluid through the shock absorber
cylinders. To smooth out the power delivery, underground chambers and pumped
hydro provide a way to store energy.
