Today we’ll be discussing the controversial topic of whether or not it is necessary to purchase organic fruits and vegetables.The reality is that you really don’t need to be buying organic foods, in fact, it’s probably better that you don’t. this may come as a shock because of the way our culture brands organic fruits and vegetables as the epitome of health and wellness. The truth is that organic foods are far more expensive despite the fact that they are not necessarily healthier, safer, or better for the environment than their non organic counterparts. In fact, studies have shown absolutely no difference in nutritional value between crops grown organically vs those grown conventionally. Foods labelled as organic must comply with certain regulations set by the US Department of Agriculture but do not have any unique nutritional or safety features. The National Organic Standards Board, which has the power to determine what materials can and cannot be used in organic production, often weakens regulations as a result of lobbying by corporations who are more interested in getting more money by using the word “organic” than they are with setting standards for the safety of foods. However, many consumers believe that the Organic label means the food has superior nutrition and is safer, especially in regard to pesticide residues. Many advocates of organic farming claim that pesticides used in traditional farming are harmful to the body and to the environment. and the Environmental Working Group has has created a “Dirty Dozen” list which lists the non organic fruits and vegetables which supposedly carry the most amount of pesticides. Proponents of this concept claim that these fruits in their non organic form must be avoided at all costs. But what evidence do they provide in support of the idea that these pesticides will actually harm the body? None. They rely on scaring the consumer by saying things like, “A single strawberry sample harbors 20 different pesticide residues.” They provide no reasoning as to why this is actually harmful and only rely on the reader to assume that these pesticides are, for whatever reason, toxic or unhealthy. The purpose of this propaganda is to drive organic food sales and make profit, not to help the consumer or provide them with  reliable information. Unsurprisingly, it is actually perfectly safe to eat the foods on this list as the USDA tests fruits and vegetables yearly and have consistently found that the levels of pesticides in non organic foods are completely safe to consume. So what motivation do these organizations have to lie about the benefits of eating organic foods? Well, of course, they profit more from the sale of organic products. much of the media promoting the health benefits of organic foods is funded by an organization called Only Organic which is a coalition of organic marketers who profit from the idea that you have to buy organic foods. Is anyone surprised that the information is false? The argument that organic foods are better for the environment doesn’t hold up either because they take up far more land than non organic foods and use compost which has a high carbon footprint. Despite all of this evidence that organic foods are not as beneficial as companies claim that they are, that idea is still prevalent among the general population. The social pressure, especially for parents, to buy only organic foods results in people overspending on groceries and, as a result, overall consuming fewer fruits and vegetables because of the high prices that they pay for organic foods. This leads to the health of children suffering as a result of eating fewer fruits and vegetables.
