Healthy is defined as complete physical and mental well-being that is achieved through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate rest. Being healthy is a vital part of anyones overall wellbeing. Daily exercise, healthy food, and proper sleep habits will help lead to a long fulfilling life. It’s important to be healthy because your body wouldn’t be able to function without the proper nutrition and exercise.
Choosing to eat healthy is a big and life altering decision. Making healthy food choices can be a challenge because people tend to reach for food that tastes good rather than its nutritional value. The National Institute Of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases reported that “More than 2 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight or have obesity.” The first step to being healthy is thinking positively. It’s scientifically proven that having a positive attitude helps build a healthier immune system and boosts overall health. Eating vegetables is also very important. A diet high in vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of developing cancers of the lung, colon, breast, cervix, esophagus, stomach, bladder, pancreas, and ovaries. Broccoli, carrots, grapes, tomatoes, cabbage, greens, and vegetables that are bold in color contain the most powerful phytonutrients. Daily exercise will also help anyone to become a healthier person. The University of Rochester Medical Center interviewed UR Medicine Sports Medicine expert Dr. Gregg Nicandri that reported “U.S. and global guidelines call for 150 minutes of moderate or 75
minutes of vigorous exercise each week. Ideally, you would exercise several times during the week for 30 or 45 minutes, so you would get activity on most days.” No one needs to go to a gym to get the required amount of exercise that’s needed daily. Instead they can take a walk, run around a neighborhood, take a dance class, go for a hike, sign up for yoga, and there are so many other options. The next step to being healthy is getting enough rest each night. If going to sleep is a challenge try relaxing by writing in a journal, meditating, doing some yoga, or taking a warm bath.

When participating in a physical activity the brain releases endorphins. Endorphins elicit a positive feeling in the body. Leaving the person happy and relaxed. Losing weight and having a healthy lifestyle will also give the individual a sense of accomplishment.
Healthy food choices are also a huge part of a healthy lifestyle. Vegetables provide much needed nutrients which include potassium, dietary fiber, folate, vitamin A, and vitamin C. The vitamins gained from vegetables are very important for the maintenance of the human body. Vitamin A keeps eyes and skin healthy and helps to protect against infections. Vitamin C helps to heal wounds and keeps teeth and gums healthy. Food that’s high in potassium help to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Fruit is a major source potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and folate.
Fruits that contain potassium include orange juice, prunes, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, dried peaches and apricots, and bananas. Whole or cut-up fruits are sources of dietary fiber; fruit juices contain little or no fiber.” The health benefits gained from fruits and vegetables are numerous. Many reduce the risk of heart disease, including heart attack and stroke, certain kinds of cancers, obesity, type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure, and developing kidney stones and bone loss. Meat, poultry, fish, dry beans and peas, eggs, nuts, and seeds have a lot of nutrient benefits. These benefits include protein, B vitamins, vitamin E, iron, zinc, and magnesium. Protein helps bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, blood, enzymes, hormones, and vitamins. B vitamins found in these proteins help the body release energy, the nervous system, and the formation of red blood cells and tissue. According to the United States Department Of Agriculture, “Eating peanuts and certain tree nuts like walnuts, almonds, and pistachios may reduce the risk of heart disease when consumed as part of a diet that is nutritionally adequate and within calorie needs. Because nuts and seeds are high in calories, eat them in small portions and use them to replace other protein foods, like some meat or poultry, rather than adding them to what you already eat.” The right food decisions can make a huge difference in anyones health.
The technical formula for weight loss is 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise. Exercise has an important role in a healthy lifestyle but, without a healthy diet it isn’t substantial. It’s much harder to burn off calories then it is cut them. According to a New York Times article, “Think about it this way: If an overweight man is consuming 1,000 more calories than he is burning and wants to be in energy balance, he can do it by exercising. But exercise consumes far fewer calories than many people think. Thirty minutes of jogging or swimming laps might burn off 350 calories. Many people, fat or fit, can’t keep up a strenuous 30-minute exercise regimen, day in and day out. They might exercise a few times a week, if that. Or they could achieve the same calorie reduction by eliminating two 16-ounce sodas each day.” Even so, a diet without exercise will in fact burn fat but it would also burn away muscle and bone density.
