ABSTARCT

The knowledge of
sand content in petroleum engineering is very important. Sand is one of the
factors that must be avoided in the drilling fluid. Sand content in the
drilling fluid must be checked and evaluated in other to avoid damage to the
drilling fluid and formation. Sand content is determined by sieve analysis
beacause of reliability of test and simplicity of equipment. Sand contamination
content determination is done in all petoleum engineering laboratory

INTRODUCTION

The
purpose of this experiment is to help determine the sand content In a specific amount
of drilling fluid. And sand is a very big disadvantage to the drilling fluid,
ad so therefore it is very prominent to know the sand composition for every drilling
fluid to be used. The apparatus used for knowing the sand content In a drilling
fluid is the “SAND CONTENT KIT” which contains the measuring tube, wash bottle,
combined fuel with screen mesh. The sand content kits finds the volume per cent
of sand sized particles in the drilling fluid. Drilling fluid is a fluid used in
drilling oil and gas wells. It has various advantages. One is to maintain down
hole pressure. The addition of sand helps fulfil that purpose.

1)    The sand content kit.
Which contains

a)     Wash bottle

b)    Funnel

c)     Measuring tube

d)    Sieve

 

2)    Measuring cyclinder

3)    Weighing balance

4)    Spatula

5)    Electric Mixer

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SAMPLE
USED FOR THE EXPERIMENT (PROCEDURES)

SAMPLE
1

1)    Measured 35g of bentonite
and 350ml of water.

2)    Pour mixture into electric
mixer to have homogenous mixture.

3)    On the measuring tube is a
point called the mud level, pour this mixture to reach that level.

4)    Also on the same measuring
tube contains water level, add water to the mixture to reach the water level.

5)    Shake vigorously to ensure
unity.

6)    Pour mixture into thee
mesh.

7)    Take wash bottle to wash
remaining sand content to ensure all the mixture in the measuring tube gets
into the mesh.

8)    Invert the mesh containing
a funnel in it, and take wash bottle containing water and pour it over the mesh
containing the sand particles, to allow to fall into measuring tube.

9)    Allow the sand particles
to settle before taking the percentage of sand content.

1)    Measure 3520ml of water in
the measuring cylinder

2)    Measure 35g of bentobite
using the weighing balance

3)    Measure 10g of barite using
the weighing balance

4)    Repeat procedures 3-9 from
sample 1

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

RESULTS
AND DISCUSSIONS

After
my experiment was carried out I found out the percentage of sand content
contained in the drilling mud to be 0.5%
for sample 1 while 0.5% for sample 2
. This was done with the aid of a sand content kit.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PRECAUTIONS

1)    I ensured I avoided error
due to parallax when taking my readings on my measuring tube.

2)    I ensured that my mixtures
were thoroughly mixture to get homogenous mixture.

3)    I ensured that the sand
particles I poured into the measuring tube settled before I commenced with my

CONCULSIONS

To
conclude, I will say that the sand content of any drilling fluid must be known
