A GMO is any type of organism, plant, or animal, whose
genetic material has been manipulated through genetic engineering. GMOS are
commonly used in agriculture, like corn crops, soy, beans and even used in
animals to produce more eggs, milk or meat. The ongoing debate of GMOs has been
going on since their use. Through all this debate there are both positive and
negative effects to engineering foods and animals to feed the world while
health may be at risk.

            Being able to engineer our food
brings many positive advantages. For example, being able to genetically modify
foods means that we can create foods that have a high resistance to germs,
bacteria and things that may spoil the food and make it unable to eat. This
means that there will be an abundance of food other than not enough food. Foods
that are genetically modified can become better tasting and stay fresher longer
on the shelf, encouraging an increasing obese society to eat more fruits and
vegetables. Foods are also modified to contain more nutrients, such as
proteins, fatty acids and higher antioxidant levels. Biotech companies are
working on modifying foods to contain less harmful substances, such as creating
potatoes containing less acrylamide which causes cancer and create gluten free
wheat. Also by using GMOs in foods, this scares people into buying organic
foods, an ultimately better and healthy choice.


            Because we are putting potentially
harmful chemicals straight into our body this does raise some health risks and
potential negative effects of GMOs. Genetically modified foods that have been
approved are considered by the government to be as safe as their traditional
counterparts and are generally unregulated. Food allergy is a big concern in
the GMO industry, creating new proteins and nutrients in foods that have never
been otherwise ingested in our body may cause an immune or allergic reaction in
our body. Many plants we eat create toxins, but they produce these toxins at
such a low level that it doesn’t affect us. Altering the gene of a plant may
cause it to produce a larger amount of these toxins that would later become an
issue. A genetically
modified plant could technically contain lower nutritional value than its
counterpart by making nutrients unavailable or indigestible. For example,
phytate is a compound in seeds and grains that reacts with minerals and makes
them unavailable to consume. Genetically modifying a plant could cause the plant
to produce higher levels of phytate, creating less nutritional value in the
plant. Also, ingesting foods that have been genetically modified can alter our
own genes and modify our body into having an increased resistance to


            In conclusion, genetically modified
foods have both their advantages and disadvantages for both health and
production. It is your own choice to encourage or discourage the use of GMOs
and buy foods that have been modified or organic. Stopping the use of GMOs
would surely be a big problem and if we use too many than it may also be a
problem, right now there is a balance. There are concerns about GMOs because
there are potential health risks and some hippie’s just want to encourage an
starving organic world.
