A survey of 500 managers by law firm Slater & Gordon about hiring more people , saying that they try to avoid hiring young women to prevent maternity leave. Also, other managers mentioned that after maternity leave the women did not work as they used to. Plus, 44 % of the managers said that financial costs of their business is a huge concern because of maternity leave. This are some of the causes of why a lot of jobs do not give maternity leave. This is a major issue for pregnant women because they need a job in this times to maintain the baby and it can cause economic instability for the mothers. Also in some jobs, instead of giving maternity leave without getting paid. In some cases they fire the women after giving birth, getting fired harms the mother and baby since she will not be able to get a job that easily now that she has a new born baby (The Guardian, 2015). As mentioned before, in some countries jobs they provide maternity leave, but not in all of them. Eighty-eight percent of women in US do not get paid when they have a kid. Which is one of the three countries that does not guarantee paid time off for new mothers. The medical leave act guarantees 12 weeks of unpaid leave to new parents but many women cannot afford that comfort “(The Cut Video, 2016)”. Maternity leave has been a practice since the 1800s, it covered at least 14 weeks of rest and the mother received two-thirds of their salary. Currently there are numerous countries that offers a six month maternity leave. What matters is that all the womens should have the opportunity to take maternity leave, since the simple fact of carrying a human inside you is not easy, now imagine working also. Maternity leave varies in various ways,Including were employers need to pay for maternity leave.Some countries tough help pregnant women and mothers by having a public fund as the Washington post called it.Many countries have realised how this is a boost for there economy thus is where the good maternity laws in countries came into action.Many low income families stay with jobs which is beneficial to the economy.Even low income countries have seen the benefit on it.All the advanced economies offer paid maternity leave except The United States of America . Maternity leave ensures a greater part of the workforce of an economy (Etehad, The Washington Post.,2016).
