Nationalism and imperialism caused tensions
prior to WW1, which consisted of the CUP or Committee of Union and Progress
using nationalism for their self-benefit, and a secret program invested in
conquering strategic land-based in Armenian territory. Primarily, nationalism
caused tension prior to WW1 due to the fact that the CUP “espoused a form of
Turkish nationalism which was xenophobic and exclusionary in its thinking. Its
policies threatened to undo the tattered fabric of a multi-ethnic and
multi-religious society” (Rouben Paul Adalian). As spoken by Rouben it is
demonstrated that the CUP or the Committee of Union and Progress used a form of
Turkish nationalism, as a clear indication of their resentment to outside
civilizations and a clear indication of their disapproval of  “tattered fabric of a multi-ethnic and
multi-religious society” (Rouben Paul Adalian). Additionally, not only did the
CUP use nationalism as a way of self-benefit but also use imperialism as a
method of genocide towards the Armenian population for the end result of
claiming strategic area “CUP devised in secret a program for the extermination
of the Armenian population. From the viewpoint of Ittihadist ideology and its
new ambitious foreign policy, the Armenians represented a completely vulnerable
population straddling an area of major strategic value for its Pan-Turanian
goals”(Rouben Paul Adalian). As indicated by Rouben’s assessment of the CUP it
is to be told that the CUP craving more power for its empire devised a plan in
conquering the Armenian territory for the expansion of its empire and thus
creating a clear image of imperialism. To conclude this discussion the miss use
of the imperialism and nationalism by the CUP caused tension prior to WW1 that
was ranged from racism to genocide.
